Recently in my history class at Piscataway High School, my fellow peers and I watched The Patriot, a film that portrays the story of Benjamin Martin joining the American Revolution when the British threaten to take his family away from him. The movie correlated with exactly what we were studying in class — The American Revolution. There is one downside to the movie, and that is it’s rated R. This rating should not stop you from allowing teachers to use the movie as a teaching tool. Although there are a few things that take place in the movie that aren’t completely accurate, the movie successfully gets across the main point of the American Revolution, supplies a visual, and introduces us to important historical figures.

The main takeaway that students get from watching The Patriot is that there were two opposing sides to the American Revolution: the Loyalists and the Patriots. Loyalists were American colonists who remain loyal to the British, and Patriots were American colonists who violently rebelled against British control during the American Revolution for the fight of an independent nation. Characters that are loyalists in the film are Colonel William Tavington and Captain Wilkins, and characters that are Patriots are Benjamin Martin and Colonel Harry

The Battle of Camden and the Battle of Yorktown are acted out in the movie, as well as an unnamed battle which is loosely based off Battle of Cowpens and the Battle of Guilford Courthouse.
