Washington Irving uses the macabre event of Tom’s wife being killed by the devil.The Story is about a poor man named Tom Walker that ends up selling his soul to the devil in exchange of wealth.Tom had a wife that which he did not get along with very well, he ends up not accepting the offer the first time simply because accepting the offer from the devil is exactly what his wife wants him to do and he does not want to let her make decisions for him so he say’s no, causing his wife to go look for the devil on her own and try to bribe him with everything valuable they had. Tom Walker ends up finding out his wife dies in attempt to bribe the Devil and finally accepts the offer that was given to him in the first place.Tom ends up being rich and decides to demonstrate his wealth to the community by buying a huge house that has no furniture but a bed inside which shows the readers that Tom Walker never changed throughout the story.
