Inmates receive low wages when they are hired in prison, but they get to earn some money and get some experience for when they get released. “ programs help inmates earn money toward their eventual release, make prison environments safer by reducing conduct problems, increase the probability that inmates will get full time employment upon discharge” ( Stein 258). These are some of several benefits hat inmates experience when they are part of these types of programs. It has been said too that it is not fair for the prisoners to be working with wages that are so low and that the working conditions are bad. Most of the people that go to prison lack a proper education and work experience so they are not qualified for most jobs.” the vast majority of ex-prisoners lack job skills, education, self-confidence and social supports” ( Moriarty 15). Getting a job with a criminal record will be a challenge for the inmates when they get out, but being able to show that they have experience in certain work area will play in their favor. Being actively participating in an activity while in prison also helps their mental health. Prisoners spend most of their live inside a cell without a specific activity to do and a lot of them suffer a lot. By being part of a work program, they perform activities that will help them forget for a while of the fact that they are in prison. Their skills are being developed at the same time and they will be better prepared for the outside
