I have actually witnessed some of my family members in labor during the birth of their children and I can’t even imagine the pain they went through. The available literature clearly states the pros and cons of these pain relieving drugs during child birth. These drugs enable the woman cope with the process and enable doctors to intervene for any emergencies. These same pain relieving drugs also prolongs labor, increases the risk for cesarean birth, newborns at risk for respiratory distress (Berk and Meyers p.130).
