The Two Super Powers of The World The Cold War was some of the most uncertain and dangerous years ever to occur in our world’s history. America and the Soviet Union were at the brink of war with nuclear weapons that would result in the destruction of our world. It was the East versus the West and it was Capitalism versus Communism. Both countries wanting to rid the world of the other. After World War II many events occurred that helped fuel the cold war and the blame can be placed partially on both countries. Russia and the United States have ideologies that differ greatly, which was a huge factor in The Cold War. The United States was a capitalist country and Russia was a communist country. Russia was an ally of Britain and the United States During the second world war, but this did not prevent tension from growing. During World War II, the Soviets and the Germans made a deal. This deal was called Nazi-Soviet Pact of 1939, and in this deal, the Soviet Union gave permission For Germany to take over Poland and Other parts of Western Europe. This angered the U.S. and Britain. Also, during the war, Britain and the U.S. waited to attack Germany, which angered the Soviets because they waited till three years after the Nazis attacked Russia. The Soviets lost around 25 or 30 million during the war and America and Britain combined lost around one million, so this also helped fuel the Soviet’s anger. Towards the end of the war, the U.S. and Britain cooperated with Stalin and his demands during the Yalta conference, solely because they need his help in the invasion of Japan. After the testing of the stomic bomb though, the U.S. no longer needed the Soviet’s help and the U.S. did not feel the need to agree with Soviet demands since they no longer needed their help. After the war America was now the most powerful; country in the world and Stalin did not like this. The U.S. had the atomic bomb, lost of wealth, and had not lost as many soldiers during the war. At first, there was the Baruch Plan, this would have ended the use of nuclear bombs and the arms race, but it didn’t work. The Soviet Union did not agree with this plan and if they would agree to it, the U.S. had to destroy all their nuclear arsenal. The U.S. did not do this and felt that they should be allowed to have nukes because they were the most responsible country. After this, Stalin set out to make their own atomic bomb and successfully made his own in four years because of soviet spy’s in America. America found out and began to make a hydrogen bomb which was much more powerful. The Soviets created those then. Then the countries began to make airplanes that could make it to the other country. Next the Soviet’s made a missile that could reach the U.S. and then the U.S. had missiles too. The United States and the Soviet Union had enough nuclear power to destroy the world, which only made tensions between these two countries grow even
