The Unites States court system currently accepts insanity as an admissible defense, allowing accused criminals to avoid prison sentences. The insanity defense is intended to allocate mentally ill criminals with proper treatment rather than placing them in prison cells. An ongoing ethical debate occurs when those who believe mentally ill do not possess the ability to be held culpable and others who and others who believe that the poor defining of mental illness in courts allows cognitive criminals to escape length prison sentences.
