In A Midwife’s Tale, the protagonist Martha Ballard lives during Colonial America when most women have minimal rights and less power than men. Since then, society as whole has changed and there has been great progress towards equal rights for women. Many great women during this period went unrecognized for their achievements and contributions to their community. However, when Ballard’s diary is dug up it brings her heroine-like attributes into light.
