The scenes of heaven are also completely consumed by vibrant colors, adding to the surrealness of the film. The large amount of color is all in stark contrast with the darker hell scenes. The only light in these scenes are fire or the lantern brought on Chris’s voyage to find Annie, his soul mate. Although even in the dull, dark shots of Annie’s house there is a little color, there is a wilted tree with blue flowers in front of the house. This contrast helps portray the contrast between life and death, and more obviously the idea of heaven and hell. In the very beginning Chris and Annie are wearing white, possibly representing their innocence and undeveloped character, they’re just two random people who bumped into each other. In the end we find out that they are kids who are innocent strangers meeting for the first time and the whole movie is a dream they may have for the future. Blue is also given a certain role in the film. Towards the beginning Annie is wearing blue and she is wearing blue in the end too. There always seems to be blue flowers as well, in the last time Chris sees his kids scene, the cemetery scene, the painting flower in heaven he crushes is blue which could represent the pain he has caused Annie, and Annie’s house
