In “The Red-headed League,” Sherlock Holmes, as the protagonist of the story tells Dr. Watson, “My life is spent in one long effort to escape from the commonplace of existence.” I disagree. I don’t think Sherlock Holmes leads a commonplace or ordinary life. According to the author, Arthur Conon Doyle, Holmes lives and upper-class lifestyle, has refined tastes, and has a career as a detective who is admired by his colleague Dr. Watson as well as members of the police and the public.
Sherlock Holmes appeals to millions of readers because in, “The Red-headed League” he represents a number of character traits that are universally admired including: intelligence, wit, decisiveness, and courage.
Later in the story,
