The Rocking-Horse Winner is a short story written by D. H. Lawrence. It is about a boy named Paul and his obsession to earn money for his mother. Paul’s family is poor that is why his mother would always complain about how they do not have money and how unlucky she and her husband have become. In their house, the young boy constantly hears whispering sounds saying:”There must be more money”, repeatedly. These phrases made him understand that their family have financial problems. He then asked his mother why they are poor and she replied to him that it is because his father is “unlucky”. With her answer, Paul thought that being “lucky” means being “wealthy”. Maybe because of his persistence of calling himself lucky, he obtained his power to predict the name of the winners in the horse race. Paul loves to play with his rocking-horse and with it he predicts the winning horses. At first, it was their gardener, Besset, and later his uncle, Oscar, who helped Paul to get into the horse race betting. He wins large amount of money by predicting the outcome of the race. Paul decides with the help of the attorney that his family be given a total of one thousand pounds each year for five years. But still, his mother is displeased. She asks for it all upfront because she is in debt. The voices in his house became more and more intense and so does his obsession to have more money. Two
