Fast forward less than a year to January 13, 1939 and we have Arthur Barker, Dale Stamphill, William Martin, Henry Young, and Rufus McCain attempting escape from the isolation unit in the cellhouse by sawing their way through the flat iron cell bars and bending the tool-proof bars on a window. They then made their way down to the water's edge, and while so close to freedom correctional officers found the men at the shoreline of island. Martin, Young, and McCain all surrendered, while Barker and Stamphill were shot when they refused. Barker did not survive his injuries.
