Is John Proctor a tragic hero or just a simple farmer tending to his crops? John Proctor has a wife, two kids and one more on the way. We soon find out John has an affair with Abigail Williams before the play. Mrs. Proctor finds out and fires her from her position at the Proctor household. Later, at night Abby sneaks out to do forbidden witchcraft with the intention to kill Mrs.Proctor but is sighted by the Reverend Hale. Abby covered herself by saying she is being controlled. John and Abby then later went to court. John then went on to call Abby a whore. Then Judges needed more information to prove John’s accusation. The officials called for John's wife Elizabeth. Elizabeth said that she felt strange when Abby visited. The judges asked if lechery is what she claimed. She denied to save John's good name. Ultimately leading to John being hanged. John Proctor does not fit the role of being a tragic hero because of his social ranking. The death of John Proctor had little impact on the town around him. “John Proctor was farmer in his middle thirties” (Miller 1037) Proctor was out on his own most of the day at work and had zero time to socialize with any town folks.
