In the time Winthrop served in office he went under criticism every once in awhile. He was for the most part condemned for contradicting the expansion of rating establishment to all freemen and for his actions when dealing with roger williams and anne hutchinson.
Roger Williams believed that the colonies should have religious tolerance. His beliefs and actions in salem led to his being banished. Winthrop realized that williams ideas could be destructive to the colony he worked to so hard to built, but he also recognized his virtues kept up a companionship with him. Roger then fled Massachusetts and bought land from the natives: which later became the providence of Rhode Island. It was the first European state to permit individuals to have convictions not the same as his own.
Winthrop was significantly less thoughtful to another individual from the church, Anne Hutchinson. They came into conflict due to anne’s independent educating of religious doctrine that the Puritans considered questionable …show more content…
Hutchinson insisted that both her teachings and her right to disseminate them were based in biblical scripture. Winthrop and his partners, however didn’t view it that way, and found Hutchinson guilty, and sentenced her to banishment from the colony.l.
In my opinion both cases were an abuse of power. The puritans were punishing people for seeking the same freedom they sought in england. The puritans should have understood what it felt like to not be able to express one's religion without restraint. Roger williams and anne hutchinson were Both were forced to leave Massachusetts because of their religious views but not before they influenced people and undermined the power of the church. I trust that in light of them settling in rhode island and giving individuals religious opportunity, the American Revolution reformers learned to gradually developed considerable influence.
