During the 1600’s a massive group of Englishmen also known as Puritans, began to disagree with the Reformation of the Church of England. The Puritans believed in one God and the one true law. In addition, they practiced their beliefs and created a strict way of life and had only one purpose which was to worship God. In hope to escape the religious persecution they were facing in England,this group decided to migrate to America in search for a Utopia containing religious freedom. Even though they wanted to escape persecution, they started to use persecution themselves. For example, those throughout the colonies who do not conform with the Puritan way were fined, banished, and imprisoned. After Puritism was spreading throughout America, the population began to increase. …show more content…
In no time, America became a homeland for those who wanted religious freedom and a home for those who seeked the chance to improve their lives. The Puritan group could not have done this on their own, they had a leader who guided them named John Winthrop. Winthrop was a religious puritan elder who delivered a famous sermon in order to encourage the group of puritans onto purifying their connection with God and obtain perfect in their society. Sermon is a discourse or lesson about a religious subject based upon the passages of a Bible. For example, sermons are used in church services. John WInthrop’s “City Upon a Hill” reveals a vision of religious utopia for the New England
