In all my years of being a student, my English teachers have always taught me to pay close attention to the different types of imagery and symbols that the authors have melted into their stories. But they never showed me how to pay close attention to the syntax and diction being used. I never knew what syntax and diction were and I did not know that it plays a major role in the writings of an author. Prior to this class I relied on my knowledge of the different types of imagery and how this affects the author’s literature. I had to pay close attention to the foreshadowing that was being presented in the text to predict the outcome of the situation. I also sometimes try to put myself in the situation of one of the characters to have a better understanding of what the character is feeling. Doing this gives me a better perspective of the situation, it also allows me not to judge the character for their actions.
