If one reads both The Wanderer and The Seafarer, they will find themselves feeling lonely and depressed as that is the mood set forth by both poems. The authors use intense diction to connect with the audience and compel readers to feel the way they do. The authors of these poems deliberately use words that will evoke emotion in the reader. For example, The Wanderer, as translated by Charles W. Kennedy, says, “Homeless and helpless he fled from fate” (line 5) and “Lonely and wretched I wailed my woe/No man is living, no comrade left, to whom I dare fully unlock my heart” (lines 9-11).
