Lily struggles with the guilt of accidentally killing her mother when she was younger. Throughout the novel, Lily was looking for a mother who would love her. She also was trying to find a way to prove that her mother loved her. Zach and Lily's conversations were more focused on “ the race-riots in New Jersey, police men taking their night sticks to nego boys who threw rocks” (Kidd 216). He becomes committed to getting everyone to have equal rights. Zach became more focused his grades rather than being known to have athletic skills.
