Anne and Margot were not killed right away, instead they were taken to Bergen-Belsen. The whole family was first sent to Westerbork transit concentration camp then the sisters were sent to Bergen-Belsen. The Van Pels went to Deportation to Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. Once they were at the camps they were all separated. Mr. Van Pels was the first to die, in 1944. He was the only one who was put into a gas chamber. They were sent to punishment barracks. Women would split open batteries, it was dirty and unsafe work because there was a certain dust that gave them terrible coughs. The prisoners had to get up at four a.m and make their beds perfectly,
