A theme that appears to be prevalent in The Sorcerer’s Stone is courage. In Rowling’s first Harry Potter novel of the series, Harry is introduced to the magical realm. Along Harry’s journey in Hogwarts, he faces many circumstances that are foreign to what he is used to. For example, Harry and his friends, Ron and Hermione, go on a quest into a forbidden forest to search for a unicorn murderer. Later they face a giant three-headed dog, an intense game of chess, some black fire, and an evil force that murdered Harry’s parents and is residing in a man with two faces. Though Harry, Ron, and Hermione face some of their fears, these events cause each of the characters to grow courageously as individuals.
Rowling integrates courage in chapter seven.
