Srebrenica Massacre
After the acts of genocide committed in Europe during World War II, the world promised never again, then almost five decades later, the world went back on it’s promise. The Srebrenica Massacre was the ethnic cleansing of over 8,000 bosniak men and boys committed by the orthodox serbians of Bosnia. After separating from the government to create their own, the Serbians felt they needed even more independence from Bosnia. The serbs raided a poorly guarded “safe haven” located in Srebrenica and from July 11, 1995 to July 22 of 1995, killed 8,000 bosniak men and boys, and relocated the remaining women and girls. The unpreparedness of the safe haven guards and the divide of Bosnia caused “the worst single atrocity in Europe since the end of World War II…” (Lockie and Rosen).

They created a government of their own, separate from Bosnia’s. This government was called The Republika Srpska. Just days after the formation of this new government, the orthodox Serbs targeted the Bosnian Muslims, who made up the majority of the population, and opposed the separation of of Bosnia. Part of the Serbs actions against the Bosniaks was what is now known today as the Srebrenica Massacre. Radovan Karadžić, the president of Republika Srpska, directed his army to “create an unbearable situation of total insecurity with no hope of further survival or life for the inhabitants of Srebrenica”
