In 1851 when the gold rush began, many people from all over the globe came to Australia in hopes of striking gold. The majority of the people who were out panning and cradling for gold were men. It was thought that women could not endure the harsh conditions of the gold fields, so it was expected for them to stay back in the towns with their families, it was “no place for a lady”. It was not long before women began to work alongside their husbands on the gold fields and some independently.
