The Things They Carried” is a story in the collection of stories by Tim O’Brien, an American Novelist, that talks about the war in Vietnam and the things the characters go through. Jimmy Cross like the rest of his colleagues carries a few items that remind him of his love Martha who he hopes will love him back soon, the same way he does. Tim uses the listing technique to introduce the primary characters in his novel. These articles are of extraordinary significance as they hint the main accounts which are included in the story. This procedure of posting the things these warriors convey work to make the full characters' composites. This by augmentation makes these characters seem more genuine to the readers. For example, Henry Dobbins carries panty hose of his girlfriend around his neck to show he is superstitious. O’Brien through this listing connects his readers with the characters. From the onset, he points out that, most of the times, the soldiers would carry themselves with dignity. This is what is known and expected of any soldier or army man. However, it is what follows the first statement that is of major concern. O’Brien brings out the fact was frightening to both those who were at home and those who were at the front. The author notes that, “…they twitched and made moaning sounds and covered their heads…” to show that it had reached a point in war where those who fought as a necessity to protect themselves and that most of them were not real soldiers as they feared for their lives and were not prepared for the ordeal at the front (Wesley, 17). Lastly, O’Brien uses the text to show that during the war, the soldiers carried all the hope of the people for a better future that why, at the end of the screams they would be ashamed but they still soldiered on and
