(Thesis Statement ) Papa to me is a loving and courageous father. Papa showed courage when he started the fire to stop the night man. He also showed courage when he refused to shop at the Wallace Store. I chose papa because he had great courage and stood up for his family.

At the end of the book Papa and mama both lost their jobs. Mama walked into work and the immediately fired her. Papa lost his job when a wagon rolled over his leg and broke it.

In the beginning of and middle of the book I Thought papa might never be as big of a character as mama or big ma. When Papa broke his leg he was more than a story. “Folks thinking that lightning struck that fence of your and started the fire….” (pg.148)
When Papa stated the fire it was shocking because there was a big storm and everyone thought it was lightning, so everyone helped to stop the fire even the white people because they did not want it to spread to their homes. “Where was Papa “ ( pg.270). In my head I was scared papa was burned in the fire, but after a couple of pages later papa was the one who started the fire.
In conclusion, Mildred D. Taylor used papa to show courage by standing up for others and protecting his family and friends. Papa has had many enemies in the book, but being the courageous character he is ,he let it go and told his family about his day and moved
