The Trail: A Fictional Narrative

After pulling on his ratty sneakers, Jake yelled, "Hey Mom, I'm going to the marsh!" and slammed out the screen door. He gathered his bucket and net and took off across the backyard, in search of boyish treasure.

Jake loved the quiet wooded creek, and the trail that meandered alongside leading to the river and marsh. On days like this, when storms had passed, everything would smell fresh and clean; The rains having dispelled the pungent reek of the marsh, leaving the cool earthy scent of the pine forest behind.

He was already out the back gate and turning for the trail, but his older sister Caroline, jogged into view. "Hold up, Jake! I thought I'd go crawdad hunting down by that flat rock, where the creek becomes marshy." She said, lifting her bucket. "Drew and I saw some monster ones the other

I'm going to take the splint off the mother when we get there. If she can walk, we'll go...if not we'll take them back for another week." Ma announced.

The human family set out with the fox family. Coming to the big oak, they made sure no other critter had claimed use of the den and finding it vacant, prepared it for the foxes.

Ma gently picked up the mother. She drew a pair of scissors out from her pocket and snipping the gauze away, lay the fox inside the tree. The mother attempted to stand as soon Ma did, and crumpled. She gave herself a shake, and tried again. She was a little bit wobbly, but this time she did it.

"YES!" Exclaimed Caroline. "You did it Ma, you healed her up good! She sure is pretty."

Jake handed his mother the wiggly kits one by one. They nestled in close to their ma. Four sets of eyes gazed out at the human family. The fox mother licked Ma's hand, as if to say thank you and Ma's eyes were shiny with unshed tears.

"We'll miss ya' girl, hope you and your babies come visit someday. Don't forget us!" Ma said wistfully.

Hand in hand the human family headed home.
