The Tuskegee Syphilis Study focused primarily on African American men and the progression of the sexually transmitted disease syphilis over 40 years. This study was based on an experiment where 399 men were observed with being diagnosed with syphilis and 201 men were considered healthy and not having the contracted disease. Many of the African men were illiterate and were lower socioeconomic working individuals that were recruited from a local factory. Participants were a part of a random sampling group and were determined based on convenience sampling due to participants being assessed at a local factory. Their participation in the group was determined by their health status with syphilis and their ability to participate in the study. There
