The Vietnam War is something you hear about but you don't know too much of. Before learning about it in class I had no real grasp around what really took place in vietnam. My family does not have any immediate ties to the vietnam war, I had just known some family friends that had went to the Vietnam that we do not speak to much. I might have asked my parents when I was younger what the situation was but I never got a good or clear response that would satisfy my question. Going into this unit I was anxious to get the answer I was looking for: What was the United States troops fighting for? The Vietnamese were fight to unify vietnam. This song was before the storm hit but it gives a visual of what was to come, “Yes, how many deaths will it take till he knows That too many people have died?”. Dylans point of view was coming from the protesters side wanting the war to stop. There is a popular country singer today known for his patriotic songs. “American Soldier” by Toby Keith is a patriotic songs, I picked this song out because it explains the soldier's point of view. “ And I will always do my duty, No matter what the price, I've counted up the cost, I know the sacrifice” This comes from the perspective of today's soldiers, he has looked at the possibilities and made his decision to fight for his country. I commence all the soldier that are in any branch of military today, they serve across the country so, at home we can sleep with peace. When watching Medium Cool we got to see how the world reacted on live television opposed to watching documentaries and people just talk about there memories and experiences during the 60’s. In Rachel Carter’s group presentation they had mentioned that mayor Daley, the mayor of chicago, was going to give the officers a pay raise for working the riots and getting the protesters out of the city. I was taken back by this because what the police officers were doing was not good, they were tear gassing people and beating them with billy clubs. While all this is happening it is also being reported on live television which was a first for the decade. The theme of television throughout Medium Cool is heavily repeated. A scene that stuck out to me was when Harold's mom and John start to talk about Harold’s dad in the kitchen while Harold is watching TV. John turns the TV off while Harold is still watching it because the news comes on. Harold has no sense of the media and what is going on in the news. John is sheltering him from the society. Harold did not grow up with a father, it is seen in flashbacks that they shot guns and talk about how to treat women. Buddy, Harold’s dad is trying to be a friend in these flashback scenes than a father figure. Another character that we read about this year who had an absent father was
