In the short story, “The Washwoman”, we see that the washwoman is very dedicated and hardworking. We see that even though she is very old, she still has a true heart with a lot of faith. She respects the family she works for and never breaks her promises. In this story, the washwoman teaches readers that in whatever we do, we should be dedicated and self-committed to the things we put ourselves into. You can't just start something and not finish it at a hundred percent. But how can we do that when technology is taking over the domestic world?

According to Wikipedia, a vacuum is a device that air pumps to collect dust and other dirt from the floor. Floors were swept with an oilcloth and wiped with a broom. Often times they would use moist tea leave to settle the dust. If the house had carpets, the only way they would clean it would be with a carpet beater or rug beater. “Carpets, rugs, clothes, cushions, and beddings were hung over a clothesline or railing and the dust and dirt was beaten out of them.” (Wikipedia, Carpet Beater) When the weather was good, they would hang the carpet under the sun to dry and wait till the wind blew at it to blow off the dust. Many people today have cleaning ladies but how often do you see them scrubbing the floors with their bare hands? Technology has replaced many of these activities in the domestic life. Water is faster for us to use and house-cleaning machines have made it way easier for us to keep our houses clean. With all these advancements, domestic workers have lost their jobs and only few remain. However, much more technological advancements can and will be made soon in the future. With this thought in mind, many house cleaners can begin to lose their jobs
