In both texts the characters are subjected to a crisis, the witch-hunt in Salem, and the plague outbreak in Eyam. Despite it being a different situation the characters both act differently from each other. Abigail stirs the crisis up with no regret of her actions for revenge while Anys tries to help those suffering and stop the crisis. Abigail’s lust for John and greed to have him all to herself sends her into a frenzy in which she wants to eliminate Elizabeth Proctor through convicting her a witch, in order to have John all to her self.
According to Abigail, Elisabeth is a “cold, snivelling woman” who is “blackening her name in the village”, as she resorts to name-calling to cast doubt in John Proctor’s mind with envy of their marriage. Defying
