Jane and her Madness “I don’t know why I should write this. I don’t want to. I don’t feel able to. And I know John would think it absurd.” (Gilman, 651). Short story The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman takes place in a nursery, with yellow wallpaper surrounding all sides. Jane, the protagonist is going psycho in the yellow wallpapered room. The symbols in this story that show her going mad would be, she kept a secret journal away from her husband, she felt confined in the nursery with bars over the windows, and she thought she saw a woman in the wallpaper. These symbols represent how she went crazy in the story.
One way Jane went insane in the story was by keeping a secret journal from her husband. John, her husband told her not to write and to just rest. An example of how John hates Jane to write is, “There comes John, I must put this away,- he hates to have me write a word,” (Gilman, 649). John did not want Jane to write because he wanted her to rest to feel better. She had to keep all of her thoughts to herself and was not able to express herself. Another symbol in the story of how Jane went crazy is how she felt confined in the nursery.

Jane thought she saw a women in the paper. This symbol more deeply represents how crazy she was getting. She thought she saw something in it, but in reality it was all in her mind. An example of when Jane thinks she sees a woman in the paper is, “I didn’t realize for a long time what the thing was that showed behind, that dim sub-pattern, but now I am quite sure it is a woman.” (Gilman, 653). After that Jane was very paranoid when she thought she kept seeing a woman in the paper. This is one of the reasons why she went mad in the story.
