In my drawing, “Home Is Where You Find Yourself,” based off of Zora Neale Hurston’s novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” it explores the concept of home as more than just a physical space. The yellow glow not only symbolizes the warmth and community of Jaine’s home, it represents Jaine’s self-discovery. Jaine is positioned right in front of the door. In her home, she experiences comfort and love, letting her hair down and wearing overalls, signifying her true self. Her home became a place for creating memories and friendships. Jaine’s story throughout the novel shows her struggle to find happiness, belonging and love within her relationships. When she finally meets Tea Cake and goes to live in the Everglades, she starts to find what she really wants in life. The light radiating from Janie's home shows the central role that her home and community play in her life, giving her a sense of belonging. The glowing inside of the house represents Janie’s self-discovery, while the shadows on the side foreshadow what is to come. On the side of the house, the viewer can see someone peering off into the distance in a stagnant position. This gives an eerie tone to the drawing, foreshadowing the uncertainty and trauma that the hurricane will cause. The ghost-like figure is unseen by those in the house, yet it’s visible to the viewer, symbolizing the potential for destruction
