Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. In the beginning, Kino thought the pearl was beautiful and shiny. He thought it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. Toward the end of the book he could see how much disaster the pearl caused. In one quote, Steinbeck writes, “He looked into its surface and it was gray and ulcerous” (Steinbeck 86). This quote shows that in the end, Kino understood the pearl was evil, not luscious. During the story, Steinbeck shows how the pearl changed through the emotions of Kino.
