Arthur Miller portrays John Proctor as a hero in The Crucible. The acts of heroism are seen through Proctor’s bravery. First, Proctor presents the love and respect he has for his wife. His regret for committing adultery is seen when he tells Abigail, “I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again” (Miller 23). Proctor’s denial of lust for Abigail displays the respect he holds towards his wife, Elizabeth. Although, he admits he still reflects upon his affair with Abigail, he is completely done cheating on his wife. By neglecting her, he shows that he genuinely loves his wife and no longer cares for the temporary satisfaction he received from a young girl. He is determined to make
