When the mass slaughter of the jewish race began in 1933, religion was very important to most families. In the town of Sighet religion is everyday, especially for Elie Wiesel. Before the word of Adolf Hitler spread Elie prays with such a meaning to the point where he cries. “I cry because… because something inside me felt the need to cry”(Wiesel 4). Throughout his journey his attitude changes towards God. He finds it soothing and a top priority before transports. Before the transports Elie says “Why do I live? Why do I breathe?” answering Moishe’s question to why do you pray(Wiesel 4). All of this changes drastically after all he witnesses. He creates a hatred for God saying he blames God for the unjust acts against humanity. For example, when it is time to celebrate Rosh Hashanah Elie says “ Why would I bless Him? Every fiber in me rebelled. Because He caused thousands of children to burn in His mass graves?” for he blames God for the fires(Wiesel 67). Yet Elie still prays, and He still Believes.
