Less than 10 per cent of the Toronto’s population is black. It could be assumed that there is a little interaction between police and the black community. But the fact is that overhalf of the people killed by police officers are black. The number of deaths throughout the Canadian history shows that Toronto police are racist. This disproportion number of homicide still exists as a result of discriminatory practices by police. Many policemen are racist even if they do not admit it. While current police chief Mark Saunders, who is the first black chief of the Toronto Police, declared his support for carding, mayor John Tory has not. People could believe that either Saunders or Tory will stop racist police practices. But the reality is disappointing. Firstly, Saunders is not going to protect people who hope for his magnanimity or at least mercy. Secondly, the Tory’s position is not clear. At first, he says that carding black people is the problem and has to be solved. But after that he claims that carding is the best way to control the level of crime for now (Kupferman, 2015). Until the government takes measures to reform the police force, racist interactions between police and the black community will not vanish. People will still suffer by the hands of police because of the one unjustified/unfounded reason, they are black, consequently criminals. If government take control of this problem and follow the OnTrak programme, they will solve two problems at once, racism and crime. References
