The novel's ending shapes some of the major themes such as, the struggle of becoming independent. In the novel, Christopher seems to want to be independent. He shows signs of this by rebelling against his father usually by lying or disobeying and also his planning for college, to live by himself. In many ways Christopher's independence is hindered by his condition. He has trouble interacting with new people and new environments, as well as many other issues.
