The events a person experiences in their youth can have a permanent influence on the rest of their life. As an infant, Theodore spent a lengthy period in isolation after an allergic reaction to medication. During this time, his mother was unable to visit him due to standard hospital policy. In a baby book, after Ted had returned home, she recorded “Baby home from hospital and is healthy but quite unresponsive after his experience”(Ferguson, Paul). Infants rely heavily on their mother’s care and affection. A child learns general communication skills and compassion from their mother. As a child, Theodore was determined a math prodigy and was able to skip two grades. His classmates treated him cruelly and often made crass remarks, such as calling him “special” or “different.” Despite his unpleasant school years, Theodore was able to attend Harvard on a scholarship at the notable age of sixteen. In his older years, Ted developed a relationship with a manager of the foam-rubber factory that he worked at with his brother.
