Theodore Roosevelt was one of the few people to become president. He was misunderstood as a child, and no one would have ever thought he would be president of the United States one day. His father always said, “He will be something great one day” (Quotes 6). A War hero. Caring. Confident. These are only a few words that describe Theodore Roosevelt.

He left his position and government to arrange and group known as the Rough Riders (Emory, p. A45). He led the group up San Hill in the Battle of San Juan Heights in 1898. A hero of war, Theodore was nominated for the Medal of Honor and returned to his position as governor. While he was governor, he married his second wife, Edith Kermit Carow (First Ladies, p. Paragraph 14).
Roosevelt’s plans for policies gave him some difficulties in his own party, so the Republican Party planned to shut him out by putting him on the McKinley ticket as the vice president. McKinley was unexpectedly assassinated. At age 42, Theodore Roosevelt became the youngest president of the United States. As soon as he got into office, he knew that he had to get people to be on his side, so he started a huge public relations effort. Engaging his unofficial policy of “Speak softly and carry a big stick,” Roosevelt enlarged the United States Navy and crated the “Great White Fleet.”
He was very fascinated with the U.S military. He wanted us to be the biggest and most powerful. He helped expedite completion of the Panama Canal by providing secretive approval of the Panama revolution (Morris, 1998, p. 2 paragraph 1).
