Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27th 1858, in New York City. The son of a wealthy partner in a family glass-importing firm, Roosevelt grew up largely influenced by his father. His father ingrained important values into him and he upheld a civic and moral responsibility in all he did. As a youth, he was privately educated and by the age of 14 he had acquired sufficient knowledge in the study of natural sciences. The knowledge he gained helped in his development as an expert field naturalist. After graduating from Harvard he slowly transitioned his academics from natural history to political economy.
