Theories are used to help us explain concepts that we may have. Mental Health counselors use theory to ground them (site). They also use theory as a means to understand what they are doing, how to service clients and how to explain counseling to clients (cite). The role of theory is to help a counselor navigate a way through a problem and help to find a solution for it. A theory is something that should be easy to understand, easy to use and designed to help a client reach their goals.
There are factors that may impact the development of theoretical orientation as a clinical mental health counselor. The counselor’s world view can impact it. This affects what theories a counselor will chose and how they will chose to apply it to the client
