Technology is an essential tool for people’s relationships. But it also opens the doors for negative behaviors such as cyberstalking. Marcum et al. article explains a study on university students using General Theory of Crime and Social Learning Theory to investigate theoretical predictors of cyberstalking. I will be analyzing in detail the results of the study conducted. Cyberstalking is a “physical stalking applied to technology and electronic devices” (Marcum, Higgins, & Nicholson, 2016) This form of stalking has become a serious problem that is constantly growing. Communication is essential in a relationship which is used via electronic means. Social networks, messaging apps among others are all forms of online communication. As Marcum et al. (2016) mentions, 40% of respondents to a study had experienced cyberstalking. Simply by logging onto their social networks, bank accounts, and using GPS on their devices is considered cyberstalking. conducted a theoretical application of General Theory of Crime and Social Learning Theory. As Marcum et al. (2016) explains, previous studies found that General Theory of Crime asserts that low self-control is a predictive factor of criminality. Individuals with low self-control are unable to see the consequences of their actions as a root cause of ineffective parenting, inconsistent discipline, etc. This leads to cyberstalking, cybercrimes like digital piracy, and hacking behaviors. In addition, Social Learning Theory asserted the fact that this form of crime is a learned behavior. It is formed by interactions with peers, family, friends, etc. (Marcum, Higgins, & Nicholson,
