To classify American literature in degrees of Americanism we need to consider the history of America and life today. My definition of First Degree Americanism includes works that involve political issues and the fight for American freedom. I define Second Degree Americanism as works that discuss the continuing fights that keep America free and peoples struggles to survive and prosper in America. Second degree is the continued fight for freedom derived from the first degree. My definition of Third Degree Americanism are stories that focus on the material possession and the freedoms and benefits given to us by those who fought and served our country. Third degree is the benefit and enjoyment realized as a result of first degree and second degree.
