Thirty Year's War

There were many factors that lead to the Thirty Year’s War. The war was fought over power, religion, and government. Because of the actions taken by Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II of Bohemia, civil war in England, and the rise of revolution in both England and Germany, the last of the religious wars took place. Between militant Catholicism and militant Calvinism, the war quickly went from a religious war to a political war. The Thirty Year’s War took place mainly in Germany but involved most countries in Europe, making the war explode into an encompassing Western event. The conflicts in the war completely altered the balance of power in Europe. The Treaty of Westphalia continued to serve an important part in diplomacy. It included the independence of Switzerland from the Empire, France’s control of territories near Lorraine, Sweden received Western Pomerania. France became a dominant European military power, and Holland (as well as Switzerland) were declared and confirmed as independent. In addition, Sweden gained control of the Baltic Sea, and France was acknowledged as the preeminent Western power6.
