The conflicts in the war completely altered the balance of power in Europe. The Treaty of Westphalia continued to serve an important part in diplomacy. It included the independence of Switzerland from the Empire, France’s control of territories near Lorraine, Sweden received Western Pomerania. France became a dominant European military power, and Holland (as well as Switzerland) were declared and confirmed as independent. In addition, Sweden gained control of the Baltic Sea, and France was acknowledged as the preeminent Western power6.
