The Culture In Us
In the Excerpt of “Losing My Cool” by Thomas Chatterton Williams, the readers are presented with the effect of a culture in the life of the author. It all started with the tragedy of 9/11. Upon its occurrence, the author was struck with how little he knew of the world outside his own very tight-knit demography. Although he knew of his ignorance, he never took interest in the affairs of the grown up world. However, the after-math of 9/11 and the recognition of his ignorance with the influence his affluent (knowledgeable) friends had on him, trigger his pursue of knowledge. As he continues to learn, he found that knowledge was always available to him, but the influence of hip- hop culture clouded his mind to those truths.
