Rush was not a believer in women’s rights but he did state that they had more opportunities than they would have in Europe. He also knew that they would require greater education than they had previously received in the past. Rush just believed that the education should be given differently than what had been given in Europe. Rush believed that the time women spent on education should be shortened to make way for earlier marriages. What he said could be seen applicable to today’s times. Today many women seek to pursue jobs that take a great deal of time out of their lives. By the time they want to settle down they are older than what most men are looking for. They pass the prime age to bear children and are only left with a nice job, house, and income but, no family to share it with. Rush also believed that women should be stewards and guardians of their husbands property. We can still see this even today as in many families the wife takes care of her husband’s possessions. The most important role Rush believed a women should take on is that of a mother. He believed the instruction of children naturally is the responsibility of the woman. Studies show that children appear most apt to succeed well as adults when they spend their entire childhood with their married mother and father, especially when the parents remain married to the present day. Rush stated that a knowledge of the English language was principle for a woman. She should be able to read, speak, and spell in the language. She should also be able to write fair and legibly. He also believed they should be well acquainted with geography. He concluded that with their knowledge in geography she will be able to read history, biography, and travels, with ease. With that it would qualify her for general intercourse with the world and also to be an agreeable companion to a sensible man.
