Writers in the 18th century are some of the best in history. The Revolutionary War writers were the best at their jobs. They had to influence a nation to revolt against the British war machine. In my mind Thomas Paine and Patrick Henry are the best persuasive writers in history. With their methods and arguments, and their combined purpose they almost started the war themselves. Most revolutionary writers had the same purpose in their writings. Patrick Henry puts it best, “Sir, we have done everything that could be done, to avert the storm which is now coming… we must fight! I repeat it, sir, we must fight! An appeal to arms and to the God of Hosts is all that is left us!” (Patrick Henry). Their overall purpose was to ignite a revolution. Create a platform for the coming war, something the founding fathers could start on and gain supporters from. These writers wanted to show people that fighting against tyranny is a good fight. Paine’s use of metaphors and Henry’s use of rhetorical questions really influences the way people think. It influences their arguments against The British. That is what makes their writings the best persuasive writings. “but it has been all in vain. Shall we resort to entreaty and humble supplication? What terms shall we find which have not been already exhausted?”(Patrick Henry). In this little excerpt from Henry's speech he shows through the use of rhetorical questions that they have tried almost everything to earn their freedom. He cannot think on any more ways other than war to get it. He says this later “But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a British guard shall be stationed in every house? Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction?”(Patrick Henry.
