The selfless work by the father is seen by the son and the gratitude he has for his father.In the poem it says,”Sundays too my father got up early and put his clothes on in the blueblack cold”(line 1-2).This shows that no matter what kind of conditions it is the the father will never fail to provide for his family in everyway. When it says “the blueblack cold”, it describes the conditions the father faces. He not only literally faces cold weather but faces the coldness of adversity. The blueblack indicating the adversity because the color of blue is sadness while black is darkness. The helpful behavior of the father shows the unconditional love he has for his family. The poem say, “Speaking indifferently to him, who had driven out the cold and polished my good shoes as well”(line 10-11). The quote “driven out the cold” shows he goes through the struggles so his family does not have to go through it. As the father routinely offers love, the warmth brought to the house before everyone wakes up describes the warmth and love he has for his family. When it says “ speaking indifferently” represents how it seems his family takes the father for granted but really they appreciate the immense amount of work he does necessary or not because that part shows how the child may act or speak one way but does not see past the truth. The father also is religious because the “good shoes” are the son’s church shoes which explain the father’s behaviour. The poem illustrates the way love makes the the work worth it. The poem says,“What did I know, what did I know of love’s austere and lonely offices?”(line 14). the part where is says “love’s austere” describes the empowering truth about love
