Three Mile Island

Humans usually associate something that has caused a great impact or has affected a large group or industry with something perceptively large or on a big scale. However, an island merely three miles long, which is tiny compared to the scale of the earth, had a great impact in our history. The Three Mile Island is an island located in Pennsylvania inside the Susquehanna River. This whole or final island was “opened” in December of 1978 when the second half of the plant was ready for use. An unfortunate couple of months later, the accident on the Three Mile Island occurred.

The accident occurred on March 28th, 1979, due to a cooling malfunction in the #2 reactor’s core which resulted in the #2 reactor to break. This break lead to an accidental leak of radioactive gas. There were no injuries or known health effects from the Three Mile Island accident, because the gas amount was not significant enough. Although there were no known obvious effects, psychological effects certainly were there. This accident erupted fear in the locals nearby the island, which lead to drastic measures. People, even though scientists said otherwise, still feared for their health, both short-term and long-term. The public fear lead to the shutdown of the three …show more content…
However, after awhile they decided it would be best to take out the both. In the future, 2034, the government plans on taking down both of the units and rebuilding a new and improved nuclear power plant to introduce a new safer unit as a whole. It is predicted to be finished and finalized by 2054. As of now, we can see in our world today that nuclear power plants have a huge impact on our economy and the world as a whole.
