Everyday in the world, many people throughout the world are born with, diagnosed with, or die from one of the countless deadly disease. It seems that every few months on the TV we hear about a new disease or illness killing or making people sick somewhere in the world. Not only new diseases, but also common ones such as Cancer. Nowadays they say everyone knows at least one person in their life who is affected by this terrible disease. Cancer can be found on just about every part of the body and is the one word nobody wants to hear. The topic I will be talking about and educating you on will be specific to Thyroid Cancer. It has been uncommon in the united states, but because of newer technology, they have been able to find and diagnose more cases then in the past and ultimately treat these people. The reason it is so hard to catch and diagnose early on is because it doesn’t typically show any signs or symptoms early on. Once the disease is developed and grows, the symptoms that could occur are as followed. Lump felt through the skin on the neck. Voice changes. Hard to swallow. Pain in the throat and neck. And last but not least swollen lymph nodes in the neck. For my friend Emily, she had a pain in her neck that was persistent and stuck around longer then she expected. This is what started the process and got her to finally go to a doctor to get it checked out. What it is is when cells in the thyroid go through generic changes and it allows the cells to grow and multiply at a rapid rate. Also the cells lose to ability to die like normal cells would, so they add up over time and form a tumor on the thyroid. There are 5 different types of Thyroid cancer. Papillary, follicular, medullary, anaplastic, and thyroid lymphoma. Out of these, papillary thyroid cancer is the most common. This is most common in people ages 30-50 but can happen at any age.
