The simulated experiment takes place in a tide-pool, where the water level changes with the tides. These tide-pools are off the coast of Oregon and Washington states. The pools are home to many different organisms like red algae, barnacles, mussels, starfish, chiton, whelk, and the exotic green crab. The green crab are said to be exotic because they have been introduced from another continent and do not belong here. These animals all impact each other’s populations and keep this tidal community in a balanced state. Together these organism constitute a food web. This community derives its energy from the solar radiation, and the organic matter that is brought in by the tides.
