After reading chapters eleven through nineteen of Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis, the reader can clearly see the main character Orual loves her sister Psyche and will do anything to protect her. Since the day Psyche is born, Orual acted as a mother figure and father figure to Psyche. Orual always does everything in her power to care for Psyche and protect her from the cruel world. She does not act like a sister growing up. When Psyche is to be sacrificed, Orual wanted to take her place and tried to save her. Sadly, their relationship will soon change. Following her sister’s “death”, Orual decides she wants to give her sister a proper burial. Instead of finding her sister’s remains, Orual finds Psyche alive and well. Psyche always obeyed Orual, and now, Psyche only obeys her husband. Orual is no longer a parent figure in Psyche’s life. Now, she has to become Psyche’s sister. Orual is scared that Psyche no longer loves her or will be a part of her life. The reader can clearly see that Orual is truly confused. She is unsure of her faith and her relationship with Psyche. When Orual tries to “save” Psyche from herself, Orual is causing more harm to her than good. She cannot accept that fact that Psyche is fine and happy. Orual eventually sees the error of her ways, but it is too late. When she makes Psyche disobey her husband’s wishes, Psyche is sent to live in exile.
Finally, Orual starts to believe in the gods and goddesses, but she is too late. She realizes she should have never gave her sister an ultimatum. Orual is ashamed of what she did, but she quickly realizes she cannot fix what is already been done. Psyche is sent to exile, and Orual will have the same fate and be “Psyche”. Orual lives her days in regret, and tries to forget about her poor sister. In the end, Orual has to live with the fact that she caused Psyche’s pain and
